Atopic eczema in children: another harmful sequel of divorce Parents of participants of the ongoing LISA birth cohort study were asked to give information on life events, such as severe disease or death of a family member, unemployment, or divorce of the parents. Lifetime prevalence of atopic eczema and incidence after the assessment period for life events were compared. Results: Prevalence of AE until the age of 4 years was 21.4%. Reported life events within the first 2 years were: severe disease (17.5%) or death (8.4%) of a family member, divorce/separation (3.4%), and unemployment (2.7%). Divorce/separation was associated with a significantly [odds ratio (OR) 3.59, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.69-7.66] increased and disease with a significantly (OR 0.29, 95% CI 0.13-0.68) decreased incidence of AE for the subsequent 2 years of life... In October 2016 I was diagnosed with a rare, highly aggressive, and very deadly breast cancer. [...] But it was certainly a shock to be diagnosed just days after getting my US work visa to move to California. I had first lived in California at 17, when I was scouted by a major modeling agency. Before I was able to get my portfolio together, I broke out in chronic hives. Heartbroken, I left for Europe. [...] It was important to me to protect my mother, now in her eighties and in poor health, from the news, till I knew for sure it was either the very end, or that I would make it through. I finally chose to go with the plant based chemotherapy, but I would do it alone in California, far from my mother and family. [...] The pioneering work of Barker et al. [5–7] on the association between low birth weight and increased risk of adult hypertension [5] and cardiovascular disease [6] led to the hypothesis that intrauterine and infantile growth failure due to undernutrition determines adult susceptibility to chronic diseases. [...] The first study was based on a cohort that included all European Jews born between 1920 and 1945 who immigrated to Israel before (‘non-exposed’) or after (‘exposed’) WWII. Based on data from the Israel National Cancer Registry, it was found that exposure (vs. non-exposure) was associated with a significant increase in incidence in all-site cancer in men (relative risks, RRs = 1.2–3.5 in different birth cohorts) and women (RRs = 1.3–2.3), with an age gradient such that the strongest associations were observed in the youngest birth cohort. Increased risk was also observed for breast (women), colorectal (both sexes), and lung (men) cancer, with an age gradient found for the f...
